How to Turn On Advanced Data Protection for iCloud

Many people don’t realize that since iOS 16.2, you can make your cloud data security more secure at the risk of potentially not being able to retrieve your data if you lose your password and have no recovery contacts.

Advanced Data Protection for iCloud offers the highest level of cloud data security and protects the majority (not all) of iCloud data using end-to-end encryption.

Requirements

  • An Apple ID with two-factor authentication.
  • A passcode or password set for your device.
  • At least one account recovery contact or recovery key. If you don’t already have one, you’ll be guided to set one up when you turn on Advanced Data Protection.
  • Updated software on all of the devices where you’re signed in with your Apple ID:
    • iPhone or iPad with iOS 16.2 or later
    • Mac with macOS 13.1 or later
    • Apple Watch with watchOS 9.2 or later
    • Apple TV with tvOS 16.2 or later
    • HomePod with software version 16.0 or later
    • Windows computer with iCloud for Windows 14.1 or later
    • If you haven’t updated your OS, you will need to do that first. If the device is too old, you may have to remove that from your account (see below).

Steps

Important: You only need to do from one device (not all), it eventually will get synced across your devices that use the same iCloud account.

iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap your name on the very top, then tap iCloud.
  3. Check the Account Recovery, make sure you have selected some trusted people as Recovery Contacts or set up your Recovery Key. The easiest is to have recovery contacts, but make sure you pick someone who you can trust. Otherwise, go with the Recovery Key but this pose another dilemma as well, as you need to store the recovery key in a safe place. If you lose it, you will never be able to recover your data.
  4. Once the Account Recovery is set, tap Advanced Data Protection and tap Turn on Advanced Data Protection.

Mac

  1. Go to Apple menu on the top left , then select System Settings.
  2. Click on your name, then click iCloud.
  3. Click on Advanced Data Protection.
  4. If you haven’t set up the Account Recovery yet, make sure it’s set up accordingly (scroll down in the Advanced Data Protection window.
  5. Click Turn On button.

How to Create iCloud Mail Email Address

Many people assume that just by creating an Apple ID, they automatically have an iCloud email address. This is not necessarily the case since people typically use a different email address as their Apple ID.

In order to use an @icloud.com (or @mac.com, @me.com for that matter) email address, you must set that up separately and this is actually a required step if you plan to use iCloud Mail.

So here are the steps to do it from your iOS device:

  1. Go to Settings and go to very top until you see your name and tap on it.

    iPhone iCloud settings

  2. On the next screen, type on iCloud.

  3. Look for Mail under APPS USING ICLOUD and turn it on. If it’s already On, that means you’ve already had and @icloud.com email address.

    Enable iCloud email on iPhone

  4. Once the Mail is On, you see an option to Create it. Just follow the instructions from there.

How to Lock Screen Rotation on iPhone

One simple trick many don’t know I keep getting asked about this many times. Unlike its bigger cousin iPad, iPhone does not have a Side Switch to lock screen orientation, but there’s still a way to do it quickly via the multitasking bar.

  1. Just press the Home button twice. After you see the multitasking bar, swipe to the right and look for the icon below.

  2. Tap on the icon, it should change into a lock.

Exit from multitasking bar by clicking the Home button once and you will see the indicator on the top to indicate the orientation is locked.

How to Setup WordPress on iPad

Similar to the previous post on How to Setup WordPress on iPhone, here are the steps to setup WordPress client on an iPad:

  1. Go to App Store and search for WordPress by Automattic. Once you find it, just tap on the INSTALL button.

  2. Once installed, open the app and make the selection that’s applicable to you. The options are pretty straight forward. If you have a blog either self-hosted or with WordPress.com, you just need to tap on the corresponding Blog option. Or if you don’t have one, you can open a new account with WordPress.com. As an example for this site, it is a self-hosted blog, so the first option, + Add Self-Hosted Blog should be selected.

  3. Enter your blog URL, username and password on the Add Blog screen. Turn on Geotagging as necessary.

  4. Tap Save button on the upper right-hand corner and all your postings will be listed on the next screen.

In the same way to the setup on iPhone, if you have multiple blogs, you can add more blogs by going to Settings, tap on Add a Blog, and repeat the whole process above.
